A Lifestyle Change Says Mrs Rachakonda Subbalakshmi

I had under gone a major spine surgery in the year 1999 when I was suffering from severe
back pain and total numbness in the right leg. I am 50 years now and I have been trying to
maintain good health of my spine ever since through back exercises.

But my back problem started to come back around a year back and on a scale of 1 to 10, the
pain in the spine shot up to 7. It was slowly becoming unbearable when I met a top Spine
Surgeon in Hyderabad. The surgeon took a very serious view about my problem and in fact
scolded me that in spite of undergoing spinal surgery, proper attention was not paid for
reducing my weight which was 88 Kgs. In reply I told him that I was able to contain the
weight at the same level since the last but could not reduce it even though my diet contained
only brown rice and other low calorie food. But the anger of the doctor was so much that he
asked me undergo Lipo immediately as my spine is unable to take so much body weight and
he walked out of the consultation room angrily. I and my husband were speechless at his
anger and suggestion of Lipo.

It must have been about after 15 minutes the doctor came back and suggested that I meet
Dr. Deepa Agarwal, a Nutritionist, for reducing my weight. My first reaction was this is not a
workable solution and I thought I should go in for Lipo.
However, for what it is worth I took an appointment and met Dr. Deepa Agarwal. I explained
my predicament. After listening to me she started writing a prescription. It was not a medical
prescription but she wrote down my diet plan for the next week and I was surprised that she
doubled the intake quantity of what I used to eat. At the end of every two hours she kept me
on some sort of the food / fluids / fruits, which are easily available. Even then I was not sure
that I will reduce my weight.
But, I followed the diet strictly in the same manner as she prescribed combined with morning
walking for four Kms. Though I shall not disclose the details of the diet, I will say that I felt
very comfortable with the diet she prescribed and I did not feel either hunger or any
weakness.

After 1st week I have checked my weight and observed I have reduced about 2 kgs. I was
very surprised. By the end of the week early in the morning I have received a mail from Dr.
Deepa regarding the next week’s diet programme.
After four – five weeks I started feeling very light and the back pain subsided a little and
people around me noticed the difference.  I continued following the diet programme and
every Saturday began with the mail of Dr. Deepa. In fact I started to wait for the mail eagerly
to know what the diet for the next week would be.   Sunday is my purchase day for the next
week diet.

I have followed the Doctors diet programme for 8 weeks and during the time the first thing
that surprised me was the different food products I missed all these years.I have reduced
about 18 Kgs during the 8 weeks, and my back pain is comedown to a level of 3 on a scale
of 1 to 10.The people around me are surprised the way I look now. I am slim with healthy
and glowing face and my lifestyle has totally changed. I am really thankful to Dr.Deepa, for
my new lifestyle which includes the all new fashion clothing that I am able to wear.
I am a happy person now. Thank you, Dr. Deepa.

WEIGHT LOSS RESOLUTION TIPS THIS COMING NEW YEAR!!

WEIGHT LOSS RESOLUTION TIPS THIS COMING NEW YEAR!!
SO YOU MADE a New Year’s resolution to lose weight like the rest of us, but research shows that most resolutions go down the drain within the first month or two after Jan 1. Staying on track is tough, but it’s not impossible. To optimize your chances of reaching your goal, you’ve got to actively set yourself up for success. This is where Dr Deepa Agarwal, Our Nutritionist’s role comes in. She’s helped us identify the keys to making your resolution stick so you won’t have to start again next year.
Resolve to think small and you can reach any diet goal — one focused step at a time. Why not start with these simple tips?

New Year’s Diet Resolution No. 1: Go Slow

Resolving to get more fiber in your diet this year? Maybe more fish or fresh fruit? Any diet change is easier if you take slow, small steps. For example:
1. Vow to add a piece of produce to your brown bag lunch daily.
2. Designate a day as fish day.
3. Package up a single serving of your favorite whole-grain cereal, then treat it as your midmorning snack.

New Year’s Diet Resolution No 2: Water, Water, Everywhere

Water: It’s cheap, fat-free, and gives your body a quenching boost. Find the idea of eight cups a day daunting? Think small:
1. Drink one glass first thing in the morning, before you brush your teeth.
2. Tempted by more soda? Another glass of wine? Drink a cup of water with a splash of your favorite beverage in it first.
3. Resolve to drink one more cup of water today than you had yesterday.

New Year’s Diet Resolution No. 3: Go for the Gold … and Red … and Purple

Colorful produce is packed with disease-fighting plant compounds, so when you shop, reach for a rainbow.
1. Designate a color-a-day. Maybe Mondays are yellow, with grapefruit, golden apples, or corn starring in meals, while Tuesdays are purple with plum and eggplant.
2. Get the kids involved and go for a theme: Build a green pizza with emerald bell peppers and artichokes, or a red produce-infused chili.
3. Vary the rainbow — pick up a new-to-you fruit or veggie the next time you shop.

New Year’s Diet Resolution No 4: Tackle Mindless Munching

You’re chatting with friends around the dinner table or watching a DVD — and you just keep nibbling. Try these tips to reign in the munchies:
1. Pop a stick of gum or a sugar-free mint in your mouth.
2. Brush or floss your teeth.
3. Pay attention — look at each piece of food you plan to eat.
4. Busy your hands with a glass of water, a cup of tea, or cleaning off the table.

New Year’s Diet Resolution No 5: Stack the Odds in Your Favor

Don’t forget to help yourself succeed, and to reach out for help when you need it.
1. Buddy up with a friend or family member with diet and weight lossresolutions. Then share your ideas, plans, and successes regularly.
2. Leave the temptations — ice cream, chips, soda — at the grocery store. Promise yourself you’ll cater to cravings only outside the home, in one-serving portions.
3. Socialize with non-food events. Get your friends together in the park, for a hike, or at the movies.

Bonus New Year’s Diet Resolution: Baby Your Body

Prevention: It’s a lot less daunting than treating a chronic condition, so do the little things that keep your body thriving.
1. Get moving 30 minutes a day most days. Go for a walk, give the car a good scrub, take a hike. Whatever gets the blood pumping qualifies!
2. Get those tests you know you need. Cholesterol checks, prostate exams, pap smears — stay ahead of the game by staying healthy.
3. Get all the snooze-time you need. Sleep helps body and soul recharge, stay healthy, and cope with stress.
Take enough steps and you’ll reach any goal. Resolve to make a few small diet resolutions this year and then just watch how far you’ll go!

Anirudh Krishnan

I, Anirudh Krishnan, am studying in Good Shepherd International School, Ooty. In Sep 2014, when I was 11yrs old (7th grade), my world came crashing down. I had a numbing pain in my legs and couldn’t walk! My movements were restricted and I had to be taken back home for treatment. The journey from Ooty to Coimbatore and the flight to Hyderabad were agonizing. I was in grief and kept weeping in pain. Over the next 10 days, after many rounds of hospitals, MRI’s, scan’s and a whole lot of other tests; we were informed that I had SCFE (Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis).

I was admitted to Udai Omni Hospital and Dr. Udai Prakash carried out further tests. He advised that SCFE was a fracture through the growth plate which was causing me pain whenever I walked or ran. He patiently educated that the remedy is to insert 2 screws (one on each hip) to fix the femur and the growth plate. I was so frightened and started weeping. I was operated on 11 Sep 2014 and Dr. Udai Prakash and his team coached me on physiotherapy and how to deal with my pain.

I came back home on a stretcher and was bedridden for nearly 3 months. Physiotherapy and watching TV became my only hobbies. I used to spend so many sleepless nights dreaming that I will never be able to walk normally again. Gradually my strength came back and my legs got stronger. I was able to walk baby steps with the aid of crutches. Meanwhile, I had missed a whole School term. I returned back to School in 2ndterm but couldn’t participate in any activities for another 3 months.

I was re-operated in Dec 16 to remove the screws. Over the past 3 years, I have got back to normal, and even won a few medals in sports for swimming and running. Ironically, I had never won a medal when my legs were normal and the journey has only made me stronger.

I even gave a talk to my friends about how to overcome pain and continue to work hard. These days, I motivate everyone that if I can overcome so many problems despite having screws in my legs, they should strive to achieve much better and not cry over small failures.

I am grateful to Dr. Udai Prakash for his constant care and encouragement. Dr. Udai Prakash has been so supportive through the past 3 years and I trust him a lot. I am happy to be normal again and enjoy water sports and all other sporting activities.
